Rate of Bangladeshi workers’ entry into Malaysia worrying, says activist

 PETALING JAYA: A migrant rights activist has expressed concern about the rapid pace at which Bangladeshi workers are coming into Malaysia, especially as many end up stranded upon arrival.

According to Andy Hall, another matter of concern is that the number of Bangladeshis entering the country far exceeds other nationalities coming to Malaysia to work.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim acknowledges the ‘urgent need’ for manpower in the textile, goldsmith and barber shop sectors.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to lift the freeze on the intake of foreign workers for the textile, goldsmith and barber shop sectors, although partially.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya will not lift the ban, which had been in place since 2009, totally for now.

“Since there is an urgent need (for workers in these subsectors), we will approve (recruitment), but not in its entirety,” Anwar said at an event in Brickfields here today.

 KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng has urged Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan to relinquish his ministerial portfolio after only 12 per cent of foreign workers successfully entered Malaysia to help plug labour shortages.

The Bagan MP said that the country’s palm oil industry is suffering due to the lack of manpower as 80 per cent of its workforce depends on foreign workers.

Migrant workers ‘threatened with deportation after complaints’


An activist says the workers at a chicken processing factory were threatened after authorities intervened following complaints about working conditions and delayed salaries.

PETALING JAYA: A migrant rights activist has alleged that more than 200 Bangladeshi and Nepali labourers working at a chicken processing factory in the Klang Valley are being threatened with deportation.
