PUTRAJAYA: A total of 22 foreigners were arrested during a factory raid conducted by the Immigration Department in Sungai Besi yesterday.

Its director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the operation was carried out at 11am across three factory locations, resulting in the detention of 18 Indian nationals and four Bangladeshis.

He said that the individuals, aged between 23 and 48, were found to be either undocumented or holding expired travel documents.

"Based on public tip-offs and two weeks of intelligence gathering, the enforcement team was deployed to the factory sites," he said in a statement today.

"Initial checks revealed that 12 Indian nationals held valid Temporary Employment Visit Passes (PLKS), while three other Indian nationals and two Bangladeshis had expired PLKS.

"Additionally, two Indian nationals were found with expired Social Visit Passes, and the remaining detainees had no valid documents or permits allowing them to remain in the country."

Items seized during the operation included a municipal licence, company documents, a Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) certificate, business records, 17 Indian passports, two Bangladeshi passports, and an employee attendance logbook.

Zakaria said that the factory was involved in processing scrap electronic equipment, cables, and wires from various countries to extract copper and aluminium.

"It is also suspected that the factory employs foreign workers with monthly wages ranging from RM1,500 to RM2,000 and provides accommodation within the factory premises that fail to meet standards set by the Labour Department under the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990.

"The matter is also being investigated under this Act."

All the detained foreigners have been sent to the Semenyih Immigration Depot for further action.

The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966, and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

"Additionally, five Malaysian men and two Indian nationals working at the factory were issued notices to appear at the department's office to assist with the investigation," he added.
